What Happens During a Psychology Assessment?

1. Enquiry and referral information are reviewed.
2. A free 20-minute Meet & Greet is arranged where appropriate.

4. Questionnaires, interviews and collateral information are collected as relevant.
5. Standardised assessment sessions are completed using tools selected for the individual and referral question.

Funding, Referrals and Fees

Psychology assessments are generally privately funded. Private health rebates may apply depending on the person’s policy, the psychologist and the service provided. Eligible face-to-face psychology appointments may attract a Medicare rebate under an appropriate referral pathway, but Medicare generally does not cover scoring, administration or report-writing time. Private health and Medicare cannot usually both be claimed for the same appointment.

The NDIS generally does not fund assessments whose primary purpose is diagnosis. NDIS funding may apply to disability-related functional supports where these are covered by the person’s plan, but this should not be assumed. Funding and rebate rules can change, so families should confirm current eligibility with the relevant funder before booking.

Assessment fees depend on the selected pathway, estimated hours and clinical requirements. The team will explain the proposed assessment, fees and inclusions before appointments are confirmed.

We understand that the cost of a psychology assessment is an important consideration for many individuals and families.

The funding options available will depend on the type of assessment being completed, your referral pathway and your individual circumstances.

During your complimentary 20-minute Meet & Greet, we'll explain the available funding options, discuss assessment fees and answer any questions you may have before you decide whether to proceed.

Medicare
Some psychology assessment appointments may be eligible for Medicare rebates when you have an appropriate referral and meet Medicare eligibility requirements.

Mental Health Treatment Plan (MHTP)
If you have a referral from your GP under a Mental Health Treatment Plan, you may be eligible for Medicare rebates for eligible face-to-face psychology appointments.
Current Medicare rebates (subject to change) are approximately:

• Clinical Psychologist: approximately $141.85 per eligible session
• Registered Psychologist: approximately $96.65 per eligible session

Please note:

• Medicare rebates apply to eligible face-to-face assessment appointments.
• Medicare does not fund psychology assessments as a packaged service.
• Time spent on assessment planning, scoring, clinical interpretation and report writing is included within the overall assessment fee but is not claimable through Medicare.
• Medicare rebates are only available where the relevant referral and eligibility requirements have been met.

Helping Children with Autism Medicare Pathway (Children Under 13)
For eligible children under 13 years of age, a paediatrician or psychiatrist may refer for assessment of a complex neurodevelopmental condition, including autism.
Depending on eligibility, this pathway may provide access to:

• Up to 4 allied health assessment services
• Medicare rebates that may range from approximately $84 to $150 per eligible session, depending on the provider type and Medicare item used.

Eligibility is determined by the referring specialist and Medicare criteria.

Private Health Insurance
Depending on your level of extras cover, you may be eligible to claim rebates for psychology services through your private health insurer.
Typical rebates commonly range from approximately:

• $50-$120 per eligible session

National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS)
The NDIS does not generally fund diagnostic psychology assessments.
However, psychology assessment reports may assist individuals and families by providing information about strengths, support needs and functional presentation.
Where appropriate, assessment findings may also assist discussions regarding future planning and supports.
Funding decisions remain the responsibility of the National Disability Insurance Agency (NDIA) and are based on their own eligibility criteria and funding guidelines.

Centrelink (Disability Support Pension)
For eligible individuals, psychology assessment reports may provide supporting clinical information for a Disability Support Pension (DSP) application.
Depending on the assessment completed, reports may include information regarding:

A psychology assessment is only one component of the information considered by Centrelink.

What is the difference between screening and comprehensive assessment?
Screening provides an initial overview and may indicate whether further assessment should be considered. It does not provide a diagnosis. A comprehensive assessment uses broader clinical information and standardised methods to answer a diagnostic or psychoeducational question.

Can Belong Health assess both ADHD and autism together?
Yes. Combined ADHD and autism assessment pathways are available for suitable children and adults through selected clinicians. Suitability depends on age, clinical presentation and clinician scope.

Can a learning assessment identify dyslexia, dysgraphia or dyscalculia?
A comprehensive learning assessment may determine whether the person meets criteria for a Specific Learning Disorder involving reading, written expression and/or mathematics. The assessment required depends on the referral question and available history.

Is an IQ assessment always included in a learning assessment?
No. Some packages assess literacy and/or numeracy without IQ testing, while others combine academic and cognitive assessment. The psychologist will recommend the package that best addresses the referral question.

Can Medicare or private health cover an assessment?
A rebate may apply to eligible appointments depending on the referral pathway, psychologist, insurer and policy. Medicare generally does not cover scoring, administration or report writing. Confirm eligibility before booking.

Can NDIS funding pay for a diagnostic assessment?

Will an assessment guarantee a diagnosis, school support, NDIS access or DSP approval?

Will I receive a written report?
Comprehensive assessment pathways generally include a written report explaining the referral question, assessment methods, findings, interpretation and recommendations. Screening pathways may use a shorter format depending on the service selected.

Can the psychologist speak with my child’s school?
With appropriate consent, the psychologist may request teacher questionnaires, school information or contact with relevant education staff where this is clinically useful.

Can existing reports be considered?
Yes. Previous psychology, paediatric, speech pathology, occupational therapy, school or medical reports may provide valuable background information. The psychologist will decide how the information should be used.

What happens if the assessment does not lead to a diagnosis?
The assessment can still provide useful information about strengths, areas of difficulty, possible contributing factors and practical recommendations. A diagnosis is not the only valuable outcome.

Can an ADHD assessment help with medication?
A psychologist may diagnose ADHD where the evidence supports it, but medication must be considered and prescribed by an appropriately qualified medical practitioner. The report may be shared with the person’s GP, paediatrician or psychiatrist with consent.

Can a report be used at school?
A report may help schools understand a student’s learning profile and recommended adjustments. Each school and education system determines how recommendations are considered and implemented.

How long will the assessment take?
The timeframe varies according to the assessment type, appointment availability, questionnaires, collateral information and complexity. An estimated pathway and timeframe will be discussed before the assessment begins.

Is the Meet & Greet part of the formal assessment?
No. The Meet & Greet is an introductory conversation and does not provide assessment findings, clinical advice or a diagnosis.
