Functional Capacity Assessments

A Functional Capacity Assessment examines how a person manages everyday activities and identifies the assistance, equipment, environmental changes or services they may require. The assessment may consider personal care, domestic activities, mobility, communication, cognition, fatigue, community access, support needs and the home environment.

Following assessment, the Occupational Therapist may prepare a report describing current functional abilities, the impact of disability or health conditions on daily life, and recommendations relevant to the person’s goals and circumstances. A report provides clinical evidence but does not guarantee funding approval.

Assistive Technology and Equipment Assessments

Our Assistive Technology and equipment assessments may involve identifying suitable equipment, arranging trials, consulting suppliers and preparing recommendations. Equipment may include shower and toileting aids, seating, pressure care products, mobility equipment, transfer equipment, adjustable beds, mattresses, wheelchairs, positioning supports and daily living aids.

Home Modification Assessments

A Home Modification Assessment considers how the person moves through and uses their home and whether environmental changes may improve safety, access and independence. Complex projects may involve builders, access consultants, suppliers and other professionals. Recommendations are based on functional need and do not guarantee approval by a funding body.

Falls Prevention and Home Safety Assessments

Falls can affect confidence, independence and a person’s ability to remain safely at home. An Occupational Therapy assessment may consider previous falls, mobility, transfers, flooring, lighting, access, footwear, fatigue, routines, equipment and areas of the home where risk is increased.

Recommendations may include practical strategies, equipment, changes to the environment or referral to another health professional. Occupational Therapy does not replace medical assessment of dizziness, fainting, acute weakness or other health factors that may contribute to falls.

Pressure Care Management and Positioning

People who spend extended periods sitting or lying down may be at increased risk of pressure injuries. Assessment may include current seating and sleeping surfaces, posture, mobility, ability to reposition, support worker assistance, manual handling needs, cushions, mattresses, wheelchair seating and night-time positioning.

Occupational Therapy pressure care support does not replace medical, nursing or wound-care treatment. An existing or suspected pressure injury should also be reviewed promptly by an appropriate health professional.
