Occupational Therapy supports people to participate in the everyday activities that are important to them. At Belong Health, our Occupational Therapists work with children, adolescents, adults and older adults across Perth, Mandurah, Rockingham and the Peel region.

Depending on the person’s age, circumstances and goals, Occupational Therapy may focus on everyday independence, self-care and daily living, play and development, school participation, fine and gross motor skills, sensory processing, emotional regulation, executive functioning, mobility and equipment, home safety, rehabilitation, fatigue management, falls prevention, functional assessment, assistive technology, home modifications, housing needs and community participation.

Our Occupational Therapists provide support in homes, schools, workplaces and community environments, as well as from our Falcon clinic and via telehealth where clinically appropriate. Belong Health is an NDIS registered provider, and we welcome NDIS participants, private clients and people using other eligible funding pathways.

What Is Occupational Therapy?

Occupational Therapy - often shortened to OT - is an allied health profession focused on helping people participate in the activities, roles and routines that make up everyday life.

In Occupational Therapy, the word “occupation” does not simply mean employment. It can include dressing, bathing, eating, preparing meals, playing, learning, writing, attending school, working, managing a household, moving around the community, using transport, managing routines, caring for others and participating in hobbies and social life.

An Occupational Therapist considers the relationship between the person, the activity and the environment. Rather than focusing only on a diagnosis, OT looks at what someone is finding difficult, what strengths they already have, what matters to them and what could make participation easier or more achievable.
How Can an Occupational Therapist Help?

Occupational Therapy is individualised. Two people with the same diagnosis may have very different strengths, goals and support needs.

Build skills
OT may support self-care, handwriting, motor coordination, organisation, planning, regulation, routines and community participation.

Change the activity
An activity can sometimes be simplified, broken into smaller steps or completed differently.

Change the environment
Changes to the physical, sensory, social or organisational environment can reduce barriers to participation.

Introduce equipment or assistive technology
Where appropriate, an OT may assess for equipment that supports safety, access or independence.

Assess everyday function
OT assessment can help identify strengths, functional abilities, barriers and support needs.

Work with families and support teams
With consent, OTs may collaborate with parents, carers, schools, Support Coordinators and other professionals.

Children & Paediatric Occupational Therapy

Our Paediatric Occupational Therapy services support children whose everyday participation may be affected by developmental, motor, sensory, regulation or functional differences.

Adolescents

Adolescence often brings increasing expectations around independence, organisation, school participation, community access and preparing for adult life. OT may support teenagers with personal care, routines, time management, executive functioning, emotional regulation, participation, daily living skills and transition planning. Goals should reflect the young person’s priorities and circumstances rather than simply focusing on adult expectations.

A Functional Capacity Assessment explores how a person manages everyday activities and where disability-related support may be required. Depending on the referral, this may include personal care, mobility, communication, learning, self-management, social participation, domestic activities, safety and support needs.

Assistive Technology & Equipment

Our Assistive Technology & Equipment pathway may involve assessment for equipment intended to improve safety, access or independence. This may include mobility equipment, seating, daily living equipment, bathroom equipment, pressure care equipment and electric mobility where appropriate.

Home Modification Assessments

Occupational Therapists may assess how the home environment affects safety, accessibility and everyday participation.

SDA & SIL Assessments

Occupational Therapists may contribute functional evidence where housing and support needs are being considered.

Physical Rehabilitation & Functional OT

Occupational Therapy may support people whose physical function has changed because of injury, illness, neurological conditions, pain, amputation or other health circumstances. The focus remains on real-world participation rather than isolated impairment alone.
Sensory Assessments

A Sensory Profile Assessment can help understand how an individual responds to sensory information and how those experiences may affect everyday activities and participation.

Sensory assessment should be interpreted in the context of the whole person rather than used to label sensory differences as inherently problematic.
Occupational Therapy for Neurodivergent People

Belong Health supports neurodivergent children, adolescents and adults, including autistic people, people with ADHD and people with other developmental or learning differences.

A neurodiversity-affirming OT approach aims to understand the person’s strengths, preferences, sensory experiences, communication, environment, regulation needs, goals and participation. Support should not be based on making someone appear less autistic, suppressing harmless self-regulatory behaviours or requiring neurotypical behaviour simply for conformity. The focus is on practical goals that matter to the individual and support autonomy, comfort, participation and quality of life.

Where Can Occupational Therapy Take Place?

OT does not always need to happen in a clinic.

Depending on the clinician, service and goals, sessions may occur in:

Home visits
Home-based OT allows the therapist to understand everyday routines and environmental barriers in the place where they actually occur.

Schools and childcare
Where appropriate and agreed with the education setting, school-based OT can help the therapist understand classroom participation, routines, motor demands and environmental factors.

Community settings
Community-based OT may be appropriate when goals involve shopping, transport, recreation, access or other real-world activities.

Workplaces
Where relevant and appropriate, OT may consider how functional difficulties affect work participation and everyday roles.

What Happens When You Start Occupational Therapy?

1. Contact Belong Health
You or your representative can contact us directly. You do not need to know exactly which OT pathway you need before enquiring.

2. We learn about your needs
Our team asks about age, location, reason for referral, goals, funding, preferred service setting and any relevant reports.

3. Clinician matching
Where possible, we match the referral with an OT whose location, experience and scope align with the person’s needs.

4. Initial appointment or assessment
The OT learns more about strengths, difficulties, goals and everyday environments. Observation, discussion and standardised or functional assessment may be used depending on the referral.

5. Recommendations and next steps
The OT may recommend therapy, strategies, environmental changes, equipment, further assessment, home programs, collaboration or written reporting. Not everyone requires ongoing therapy.

Where available, Belong Health offers a free 20-minute Meet & Greet with a clinician. This gives you an opportunity to discuss what you are looking for, ask questions, understand the clinician’s approach and decide whether the service feels like the right fit. There is no obligation to continue after the Meet & Greet.
Immediate Capacity & Current Availability

Availability varies between locations, clinicians and service types. Where we have Occupational Therapists with immediate capacity, our admin team can help identify an appropriate available clinician. If a preferred clinician is unavailable, options may include another nearby OT, clinic-based support or telehealth where clinically appropriate.

Occupational Therapy Funding Options

Belong Health welcomes people accessing Occupational Therapy through a range of funding pathways.

NDIS
Belong Health is an NDIS registered provider. Depending on the participant’s plan, disability-related needs, goals and current NDIS requirements, eligible funding may support Occupational Therapy, assessment, reporting and related OT services.

Private clients
Many Occupational Therapy services can be accessed privately without NDIS funding. A GP referral is not generally required for private OT unless a particular funding pathway requires one.

Private health insurance
Some private health insurers provide rebates for Occupational Therapy depending on the policy and level of cover. Clients should confirm eligibility and rebate amounts directly with their insurer.

Medicare
Some people may be eligible for Medicare-supported allied health services through an appropriate GP care arrangement. Eligibility, referral requirements and rebates should be confirmed with the GP and Medicare.

DVA
Eligible veterans may be able to access Occupational Therapy through Department of Veterans’ Affairs arrangements.

Aged care and other pathways
Other funding arrangements may apply depending on eligibility and circumstances. Our admin team can explain what documentation Belong Health requires, but eligibility is determined by the relevant funder or scheme.
