What is a Functional Capacity Assessment?
A Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is a comprehensive Occupational Therapy assessment used to evaluate a person’s ability to manage daily life. It looks at how someone functions across areas like self-care, mobility, communication, social interaction, learning, and community access. This assessment is essential for creating or reviewing an NDIS plan, ensuring you receive the correct funding and support to live as independently as possible.

FCA Reports are often required by the NDIS to:

​Belong Health provides Mental Health Functional Capacity Assessments (FCA) for individuals with psychosocial disabilities and neurodivergence (including Autism).
Our Mental Health Occupational Therapist assesses how mental health or neurodevelopmental conditions impact everyday functioning across the NDIS domains, using a strengths-based, person-centred approach while meeting NDIS reporting requirements.

Can I use my GP-referred OT sessions for a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) to save costs?

Yes, if your GP has referred you for 5 OT sessions under a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan, these can be applied towards a Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) to help reduce overall costs. Here's how it works:

How Can My GP-Referred OT Sessions Be Used for an FCA?A CDM plan allows for up to 5 allied health services per eligible patient per calendar year, including OT sessions. Health.gov.au
These sessions can be utilised to assess key areas of your Functional Capacity, such as mobility, self-care, and cognition, forming the initial part of your FCA.

How Does This Save Me Money?

An FCA generally takes between 10-15 hours, depending on the complexity of your assessment. By using your 5 OT sessions from the CDM plan, you can cover part of the time spent on Functional Capacity evaluations. After using the 5 OT sessions, you would then need to pay for the remaining 5-10 hours required to complete the full FCA.
For private clients, this means you can save on the total cost of your FCA by applying your CDM plan OT sessions towards the assessment phase.

Will I Still Need a Full FCA?
Yes, a full Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) is required, even if you use the 5 GP-referred sessions for part of the evaluation. The FCA includes a more detailed assessment and report that will be billed separately.

How Are the Sessions Billed?

• GP-referred OT sessions under a CDM plan: These 5 sessions are billed according to the CDM plan at the standard OT session rate.
• FCA: The remainder of the FCA (which is typically 5-10 additional hours, depending on the complexity) will be billed separately.

​By using your GP-referred OT sessions from a CDM plan, you can maximise your savings while still getting a thorough Functional Capacity Assessment to support your NDIS or other funding claims.

​Referrals to Belong Health
We are Medicare and Private Health fund registered for Occupational Therapy and Speech Pathology.

EPC/Team care arrangements/Chronic disease (CDM) or GP management plans and self-referrals are all acceptable.

You can get a referral from your/your child’s GP for OT on a Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan this gives you 5 sessions for OT per calendar year with a $53 rebate available on each session or a Helping Children with Autism/PDD/ or an eligible disability package (20 sessions between allied health professionals, as set up by a Paediatrician/Psychiatrist) which gives your child under 16 years a $75 rebate per session for the 20 sessions, you can use up to 10 sessions per Health Professional (up to 10 for OT) and you will need a separate referral letter from your child’s Paediatrician for each Allied Health Professional you are seeking services from.

Private Health
Your Private Health fund may cover up to 75% of the cost of OT sessions if this is included in your cover, be sure to call them or check your policy for details.

No referral or self referral
You do not require a referral for accessing OT

We are an NDIS Registered Provider
Whether you or your child have NDIS funding that is NDIS Managed, Third Party Plan Managed or you are Self-Managing your funds, you are able to use your funding to cover the full cost of therapy services plus travel costs. You will need provide us with your/your child’s NDIS number and plan details ahead of your first session. Once you have booked a session or contacted us, our team will be in touch to discuss our service agreement and provide you with our services price list.
