Some children may show a few of these signs and not be autistic, while others may show different patterns entirely.

If something doesn’t feel quite right, it’s okay to explore it further.

​This checklist is designed to help you reflect on what you may be noticing in your child.
This is not a diagnostic tool, but it can help you:

• Identify patterns
• Feel more confident in what you’re seeing
• Decide on your next steps

Ages 1–2 Years (Early Toddlers)

At this stage, signs are often subtle and relate to early communication and interaction.

​You might notice:

• Limited eye contact
• Not consistently responding to their name
• Delayed or limited babbling
• Not pointing, waving, or showing objects
• Limited interest in people or faces
• Repetitive movements (e.g. hand flapping, rocking)
• Strong reactions to sounds or textures

Ages 2–3 Years (Toddlers)

​Differences may become more noticeable as communication and play develop.

​You might notice:

• Delayed speech or few words
• Repeating words or phrases (echolalia)
• Difficulty following simple instructions
• Limited pretend play (e.g. feeding a doll)
• Preferring to play alone
• Becoming upset with changes in routine
• Sensory sensitivities (noise, clothing, food textures)

Ages 3–5 Years (Preschool)

Social and emotional differences often become clearer in group settings.

​You might notice:

• Difficulty interacting with other children
• Limited back-and-forth conversation
• Challenges understanding emotions or social cues
• Intense focus on specific interests
• Rigid routines or need for sameness
• Difficulty with transitions (e.g. leaving activities)
• Big emotional reactions or meltdowns

Ages 5–7 Years (Early Primary School)

​As school begins, expectations increase and differences may become more noticeable.

​You might notice:

• Difficulty making or keeping friends
• Struggling with group activities
• Taking language very literally
• Challenges with attention and organisation
• Sensory overwhelm in busy environments (e.g. classroom, playground)
• Difficulty adapting to changes in routine

Ages 7–10 Years (Later Primary School)

Some children may have more subtle signs that become clearer over time.

​You might notice:

• Social difficulties despite wanting friendships
• Anxiety in social or school situations
• Strong, focused interests
• Difficulty understanding others’ perspectives
• Masking behaviours (trying to “fit in”)
• Fatigue after school due to effort in social environments

You don’t need to wait for everything to be clear before taking the next step.
Many parents notice patterns over time and exploring support early can be helpful.
